Why We Need to Rethink How We Judge Communication (Especially for Neurodivergent Leaders)

Aug 04, 2025

We live in a world that worships fast talkers. In meetings, at dinner tables, and on Zoom calls… quick responses are praised, while long pauses get mistaken for confusion.

The problem? That entire model of communication is built for one kind of brain.

In my latest episode of the Play Big Queen Podcast, I unpack why this is not just incorrect, it's dangerous.

As someone who is multiply neurodivergent, who’s had a TBI, who’s recovered from a stroke, and who once froze mid-sentence in group settings not from fear, but from overwhelm… this conversation is deeply personal.

Here’s what I want you to know:

1. Comprehension and Expression Are Not the Same

Wernicke’s area helps us understand language.

Broca’s area helps us speak.

In neurodivergent brains, they often don’t work at the same speed.

2. Speech Delays Are Not a Sign of Low Intelligence

It may take someone longer to translate their thoughts into words, especially when dealing with trauma, ADHD, sensory overload, or emotional dysregulation.

That pause isn’t a lack of knowledge, it’s a different rhythm.

3. Internalized Ableism Shows Up in Our Speech

Many of us have learned to judge ourselves for being “too slow,” “too scattered,” or “not articulate enough.” But these are not failures. They are signs of systems not designed for our minds.

4. We Need to Redesign the Table

Offering someone a seat isn’t enough.

We need communication norms, leadership structures, and workplaces that honor slower processing, looping, silence, scripting, and all the ways our brilliance shows up.

5. This Isn’t Just About Disability

Most people will experience changes to speech, processing, or cognition at some point in life… whether from aging, trauma, grief, illness, or stress. Communication justice isn’t niche… it’s universal.
