When Burnout Is Real: Perfectionism and Learning to Rest
Sep 29, 2025
Burnout doesn’t always come crashing down.
Sometimes it creeps in quietly, even when you’re doing all the “right” things.
For neurodivergent women, burnout is more than exhaustion.
It’s about nervous system overload, perfectionism patterns, and the pressure of constantly trying to prove our worth in a world that doesn’t honor our wiring.
This is my story of how burnout showed up in my life, what I learned about perfectionism versus precision, and why rest is one of the most powerful leadership tools we have.
Burnout and Neurodivergence
If you’re autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent, you know the truth: burnout doesn’t only happen when you neglect yourself. It can show up even with solid self-care routines, supportive tools, and good systems in place.
Our capacities shift. Sometimes we don’t even notice until we’re running on empty. That’s exactly what happened to me.
I was doing “all the right things” like meal prep, pleasure breaks, self-care practices, and support.
But suddenly, I found myself depleted. My body told me it was time to stop.
That’s the reality of neurodivergent burnout: it sneaks in, even when things look fine from the outside.
Perfectionism vs Precision:
Why the Difference Matters
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the difference between perfectionism and precision.
-
Perfectionism is survival mode. It’s rooted in black-and-white thinking. It tells us that unless everything is flawless, we’re unsafe. It’s fueled by years of trying to prove ourselves in a neurotypical world.
-
Precision, on the other hand, is brilliance. It’s the gift of noticing details, seeing patterns, and delivering excellence... not from fear, but from innate talent.
The problem is that perfectionism keeps you stuck. It feeds anxiety, shame, and burnout. Precision, however, allows you to shine. It’s how you express your brilliance without being consumed by the need to prove yourself.
How Burnout Sneaks In
Burnout doesn’t always roar in like a storm.
Sometimes it’s a whisper. It's the slow creep of exhaustion that builds under the surface.
For me, it looked like holding tension in my body, working hard to keep up, and then suddenly hitting a wall. I realized that even with all my tools, my energy had shifted.
That’s what burnout does.
It signals that something inside has changed
And the most important step is to notice it without shame.
Being Human Is the Goal,
Not Being Perfect
This is the heart of the lesson: perfection is not the goal. Being human is.
Perfectionism convinces us that mistakes are dangerous. Humanity reminds us that mistakes are natural. And when we allow ourselves to be human — messy, brilliant, contradictory, evolving — we create space for true leadership.
For neurodivergent women especially, this matters. The goal is not to be flawless, but to show up as real, embodied, and powerful.
Rest as a Leadership Practice
Rest is not weakness. Rest is strategy.
When you honor your nervous system, you give yourself the reset needed to lead with clarity and confidence. Burnout is not the end, it’s the body’s sacred invitation to pause, recalibrate, and return stronger.
Here’s the reality I want you to remember:
✨ Perfectionism is survival.
✨ Precision is brilliance.
✨ You can be brilliant and messy at the same time... and still lead with power.
The Play Big Path
My mission is to help women with invisible disabilities and neurodivergence create success on their own terms. That means building businesses, movements, and lives that work with your wiring, not against it.
If you’re feeling the weight of burnout right now, this is your reminder: rest, support, and compassion matter more than flawless performance.
You are already powerful.
You are already worthy.
And your brilliance doesn’t disappear when you slow down.
